How to Be Seen at Your Next Trade Show

When companies go to trade shows frequently, they understand one of the most basic things about them: the whole idea is to be seen. Because – let’s face it – if prospects can’t see you, they won’t find you and unless they find you they don’t become customers.

Expo and event organizers know this, of course, and they do their best to make money by selling out the premium spots to companies that have a long history of attendance and companies than can pay up.

So, assuming your budget doesn’t account for buying the premium booth space, keep in mind that if you drop out of a show for a year or more, you’re erasing all of that goodwill. Maybe it’s not that important, but on the margin, your company will get preferential booth siting if you have exhibited consistently at that show.

Booth placement is a key consideration, so let’s break it down. When attendees enter a convention center or hall they take notice of the first 3 rows and a few aisles – more rows than aisles, actually. So you’d like to be located near the front door, or or near the center aisle.

What if you can’t do that? Well, the front of the hall is generally better than the back. And the sides are worse than the center. You also want to avoid visual obstructions – columns or structures that prevent people from seeing your booth.

Ok, so you cut your best deal and you got the booth you got. What else can you do? At your booth you can increase your visibility in three easy ways. The first is with a graphics header at your booth. This is very basic – you do need to make sure you conform the the show guidelines and height restrictions, of course. But an elevated header, attached to the front of your display can give you as much as a foot and a half more visibility. And that can actually matter, even though it doesn’t sound like a lot, because most booths will be at a lower height.

A second way to increase visibility is with a tower display. Usually a tower is only as high as your display but the key is that a tower, with its small footprint, is able to be placed on the corner of your booth, much closer to traffic flow – and that will increase visibility.

The last way is with a banging sign or banner. These are displays that are suspended form the event venue ceiling that hang down at a height of 16-20 feet, depending on what the venue restrictions and regulations are. You’ve undoubtedly seen them – they are effective because they are not too, too popular. One of the reasons is that they take some planning and they are not inexpensive. In addition to the hanging sign itself, you will pay for labor  – “riggers” is the correct technical term – at the venue for installing (hanging) and uninstalling (taking it down) your sign. This can cost a few thousand dollars, which will sound like a lot. But keep in mind, even at large events you won’t see many of these – maybe 10. That makes them very unique and much, much more visible than even a very large booth. So if you can justify the expense, a hanging sign may be your best “bang for the buck” when it comes to visibility.
